Capcom interview reveals MvC3 and Darkstalkers 4 possibilities

Here is the latest Marvel vs. Capcom 3 news coming straight from Ono-san himself, the producer of Street Fighter IV. For those too lazy to listen to the entire Podcast coming from BionicCommando.com, here are the relevant details pertaining to MvC3 and Darkstalkers 4.

Q: What is the next fighter that Capcom will be working on? Marvel vs. Capcom 3 please.

A: “Good question. That’s a very, very good question. Perhaps this user has read or heard interviews I done with Gamespot in which I had a desire to express interest in making more Versus games. Speaking honestly, it’s not that much that I want to make the game as is I want to play it. So if any Capcom staff are listening to this Podcast, please by all means step up and and volunteer to make this happen if you’re interested. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be at the helm of a game that would require delicate balance adjustments for a cast of 50 or however many characters would end up in a potential game like Marvel vs. Capcom 3. But I do really hope someone else makes it though.”

Q: You said you would like to pick up work on a new Darkstalkers game working on the same 2.5? style. Is that something you would still be interested in?

A: “Oh man, I would so totally love to make that game. I’m personally a big fan of the Darkstalkers series. So I would really jump at a chance like that. The combos in this game are a blast. The series was unique in that it offered a comprehensive chain combo system like that. There are tons of characters in 3 but I can think of plenty more in the horror and fairytale motif. And it would be really fun to take the game in new directions as well. If I ever had the chance, I would love to make that game. Sadly, the Darkstalker series never enjoyed the same popularity that other Capcom franchises have. In fact, I’ve actually brought up the possibility with Capcom USA and was told point blank that they don’t feel a Darkstalkers game is necessary. Once again, if we can get enough people bombarding Capcom with requests, we could definitely turn that situation around, I think. The user that has asked this question might be a good candidate to get that rolling. “

Fans demand MvC3, not SvC3

It’s 2009. Time for more Marvel vs. Capcom 3 news. Well, not exactly. Apparently, there was a rumor back in 2001 about the development of Capcom vs. SNK 3. Due to the success of Street Fighter IV, these type of rumors have started surfacing again. In a recent interview with JeuxActu, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono commented on SF4, “because fans demanded it, they got it.” He goes on to say that the same may apply to Capcom vs. SNK 3. Don’t hold your breath. According to the comments on Kotaku, the fans would rather see MvC3!

Marvel Executive says MvC3 is a possibility

Kevin Feige

IGN reports that at San Diego Comic-Con 2008, President of Production at Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, was asked if a new Marvel vs. Capcom game is possible someday. He replied:

“Yes. And maybe sooner than you think.”

The article goes on to mention that, since Tatsunoko vs. Capcom may not come to the U.S. due to licensing issues, the engine could be used to make MvC3; and in a relatively short amount of time.

Alright, this is too good to be true. We now have someone from Marvel hinting at creating Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Let’s get Feige and Yoshinori Ono in a room together so we can start resurrecting this beast!

Capcom producer has hopes for MvC3

In a Street Fighter IV interview from December 2007, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono expresses his interest in creating a new Marvel vs. Capcom game.

EGM asked Ono (Yoshinori Ono, Capcom producer), if he’d like to try reinventing any of the other fighting franchises languishing in Capcom’s stable. As it turns out, he sure does:

“Personally, I’d love to make a new Marvel vs. Capcom, and I’d also like to see the triumphant return of Darkstalkers to a new generation of technology. It would be an interesting challenge with Darkstalkers, because in the old games, you’d see a lot of really interesting animations as characters would morph into different forms. That would be tricky to do with this 3D engine, but not impossible. In two or three years, if I got the chance to resurrect that series, I’d like to shock Hollywood with how good the graphics would look.”
